ILM Level 3 Coaching Through Coaching & Supervision

The ILM Level 3 Programmes in Coaching offer a professional introduction to coaching for team leaders and first line managers and for those who have a coaching role. They give team leaders and managers the opportunity to move into a role as a coach in their workplace.

The programmes will also help them gain a detailed understanding of good practice in workplace coaching, the knowledge and skills required to plan and organise a programme of coaching and the opportunity to put this into practice whilst receiving coaching and supervision.

Induction session

Learning themes:

  • Effective and ethical workplace coaching
  • Workplace coaching in practice.
  • Professional practice (Certificate only)

Award: 6 hours of coaching practice (2 coachees) with coaching supervision – 2 x 1 hr coaching & supervision sessions (MS Teams or Zoom)

Certificate: 12 hours of coaching practice (4 coachees) with coaching supervision – 4 x 1 hr coaching & supervision sessions (MS Teams or Zoom)

Assessment

Reflective review / assignments / coaching or mentoring diary / personal development plan.

*an instalment payment arrangement is available for self-funding students.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements, but participants will normally be either practising team leaders or first line managers or have a workplace coaching role and the opportunity to meet the assessment demands.

Learning activities

  • Online learning
  • Monthly coaching/supervision sessions with a highly experienced executive coach/supervisor
  • Completion of a series of Reflective Reviews designed to help you reflect on your progress.
  • A series of practical activities which guide students through the coaching process from contracting to evaluation.
  • Regular feedback from your coach / supervisor and the assessment team

The programmes will also help them gain a detailed understanding of good practice in workplace coaching, the knowledge and skills required to plan and organise a programme of coaching and the opportunity to put this into practice whilst receiving coaching and supervision.

They are delivered through a blend of learning that can be tailored to the needs of each student. They can be challenging programmes but the rewards can be high.

The programmes are centred on professional coaching and supervision for introducing coaching in the workplace. Students gain a sound understanding of the role of the coach and good practice in coaching which enables them to plan and organise coaching in their workplace.

As they undertake the coaching programme, students use feedback in supervision sessions to reflect on and develop their effectiveness.

The programme of learning offers a combination of coaching and supervision sessions, set readings, individually defined CPD, online learning and reflective reviews.

Students develop their coaching skills supported by their coach, focusing on achieving and assessing the results for their team members and their organisations.

Programme content

Theme 1: Effective and ethical workplace coaching

Award & Certificate

This theme offers you a broad introduction to coaching and to the role of the coach in the workplace. It will challenge you to plan for and develop your own role as a workplace coach. It will get you started on your workplace coaching practice.

The learning is designed to take six weeks.

In Theme One we will cover part of the following required ILM units:

  • Understanding good practice in workplace coaching
  • Undertaking coaching in the workplace

By the end of this theme, you should be able to:

  • Understand the context for effective workplace coaching
  • Understand the process and content of effective workplace coaching
  • Plan and organise workplace coaching sessions
  • Undertake at least six hours of effective workplace coaching activity

This theme is designed to introduce you to different aspects of the role of the coach in the workplace. These are:

  • Workplace coaching in context
  • The process and content of effective workplace coaching
  • The workplace coaching contract
  • Workplace coaching practice

The learning will highlight key questions for you to consider in relation to your own workplace and support you in preparing and planning for undertaking coaching.

At the end of each session, you will complete and submit a Reflective Review which will be assessed and count towards gaining your qualification.

During Theme One, you will have a coaching session which will enable you to review your learning and move into the next theme where you will reflect on your workplace coaching practice.

Theme 2: Workplace coaching in practice

Award & Certificate

This theme will provide you with tools for reflective practice.

It will challenge you to translate your knowledge and understanding into best practice in your own role as a workplace coach as you undertake six or more hours of coaching practice. It will also encourage you to reflect in depth on your own performance.

The learning is designed to take six weeks.

In Theme Two we will cover part of the following required ILM units:

  • Understanding coaching in the workplace
  • Reflecting on workplace coaching skills

By the end of this theme, you should be able to:

  • Summarise and analyse a period of formal coaching within the workplace using stakeholder feedback
  • Assess your own abilities and characteristic as a workplace coach
  • Reflect on your own communication and interpersonal skills when coaching
  • Summarise your coaching reflections and plan for future development needs

Theme two is designed to introduce you to different aspects of the role of the coach in the workplace. These are:

  • Reflective practice
  • Supervision
  • Personal development planning

This theme will highlight key questions for you to consider in relation to your own practice and support you in planning to undertake your coaching practice.

At the end of each session, you will complete and submit a reflective review which will be assessed and count towards gaining your qualification.

During Theme Two, you will have a supervision session which will enable you to review your performance as a workplace coach.

Theme 3: Professional practice

Certificate only

This theme provides you with supervision for your development as a workplace coach. You will reflect on your development through the extended period of workplace coaching and plan for your continuing professional development.

You will already have submitted evidence of 6 or more hours of coaching contact time which count towards the total of 12 hours practice.

The learning is designed to take twelve weeks. You are strongly recommended to work through the list of activities in the order in which they are presented.

In Theme Three we will cover part of one ILM unit: Undertaking an extended period of coaching in the workplace

By the end of this theme, you should be able to:

  • Plan and organise workplace coaching sessions
  • Undertake at least 12 hours of effective workplace coaching activity
  • Collect feedback from coaching clients on your own performance as a workplace coach
  • Use tutorial supervision to develop and improve your own coaching practice and to plan for your own continuing development as a workplace coach

You will reflect on your development as a workplace coach. This will be assessed and count towards gaining your qualification.

You will work through four stages during Theme Three:

  • Reviewing the workplace coaching contract
  • Workplace coaching sessions
  • Reflecting on the effectiveness of your workplace coaching
  • Continuing professional development

At the end of each session, you will complete and submit a reflective review which will be assessed and count towards gaining your qualification.

During Theme Three, you will have two supervision sessions which will enable you to complete your reflections on your development as a professional workplace coach.

Progression routes

These Level 3 qualifications form an excellent introduction to professional practice in coaching.

Achievement at this level offers a progression route to the ILM L5 qualifications in Coaching and Mentoring which can then lead to the ILM L7 qualifications in Executive Coaching and Leadership Mentoring.
